Benefits of laser shaft alignment

Incorrectly aligned shafts and the consequences of this are behind more than 50% of all malfunctions in rotating machines. This increases unscheduled downtime and therefore production losses. This, of course, increases overall maintenance costs. In addition, misaligned shafts increase vibrations and friction, which can increase the energy consumption considerably and cause premature bearing and seal damage.

Benefits of belt transmission alignment

Straightness is measured daily in many industries. For example, beams, rolls, pipes, machine ends, machine runners and conveyors. Straightness is often a basic requirement in order for a machine to function correctly and/or produce fault-free parts.

Principle for straightness measurement

The basic principle of straightness measurement is that all measurement values will show the position of the detector unit relative to the laser beam. The laser beam can be envisioned as a very, very long, absolutely straight and weightless ruler. First, the beam is roughly aligned along the measurement object. The detector is then positioned on the selected measuring points and the values registered. According to the measurement, two of the measuring points are set to zero, and the other points are recalculated to this reference line. New measurement points can be added or removed. An offset value for all points can be added for automatic calculation of correct adjustment values. Adjustment can be made with live values for continuous feedback.

Relative or absolute reference

When the measured object is to be the reference (relative reference), the laser beam is levelled to the detector positioned at the two reference points. This levelling procedure is always carried out according to the same principle – zeroing the laser. When using the horizontal plane reference (absolute reference), the laser beam is levelled according to the vials on the laser transmitter (D22 or XT20/XT22). Then all detector values are shown in relation to the horizontal plane.

What equipment do you need?

  • To measure straightness, you would typically use the E920 Geometric system, which can also perform flatness, squareness, level, and parallelism measurements.
  • For simpler measurements you can also use the XT770 Shaft+GEO alignment system.
How to measure flatness

A basic prerequisite for machine installation is that the base is flat. It is also a requirement for machine tables, so that manufactured parts then maintain tolerances. Flanges on tower segments for wind turbines are also checked for flatness, but here the requirement can be linked to a desired inclination of the plane (taper).

The checking of squareness is carried out in a large number of applications, such as machine tools, coordinate measurement machines and mechanical constructions.

Measurement of squareness

When measuring squareness, first record two measurement values on a single object to create a reference for the angle. Then use the built-in prism in laser transmitter D22, which deflects the laser beam 90°, and record two new measurement values on the second object. The measurement values are converted into an angular value, showing any deviation from 90° in the second object.

What equipment do you need?

Squareness is measured with the Easy-Laser® E920 Geometric system, which can also perform straightness, flatness, level, and parallelism measurements.

How to measure parallelism

Examples of parallelism measurement include mutual parallelism between rolls and other surfaces in papermaking machines, printing presses, rolling mills, etc. Other examples include overhead tracks, rails, press machine tables.

What equipment do you need?

Horizontal plane

Digital levels are extremely useful tools for setting-up and aligning most types of machines, for example, levelling machine tables, rolls, bases, etc. Easy-Laser® XT290 also offers the possibility of documenting the work, by connecting wirelessly to the Easy-Laser XT Alignment app. Today, documentation is a common client requirement. XT290 is the ideal complement to your laser-based alignment system.

Another method to level a machine is to use laser transmitter D22 to the horizontal plane (with transmitter placed at the side of the machine), and then using the laser beam as a reference for the horizontal plane. Using the detector, measure at two locations on the machine and adjust with live values until you get the same measurement value.

What equipment do you need?

For best performance and ease-of-use, the digital levels are suggested.

Reason for dynamic measurement

All excessive forces applied on the machine nozzles/ports will generate stress in the casing, and it might change the designed geometry of the machines. It will cause misalignment, internally and externally. Leakages will appear. A distorted casing might lead to internal contact between stationary and rotating components of the rotating machinery. This situation will lead to catastrophic failure.

When to measure

The dynamic measurement must be performed at SAT (Site Approval Test) before starting the operation, or every time the equipment has been removed for overhaul and placed back. Static pipe strain is measured while the equipment is in installation phase, during pipe attachment, or by disconnecting existing connection and measuring the misalignment.
