OVERVIEW:

Mining shovels and excavators are essential to open-cut mining operations, working 24/7 to remove overburden or ore. These massive 600-tonne machines can move up to 60 tonnes of material in a single bucket load. The articulating joints on the boom, stick, and bucket are subject to extreme wear due to constant use and heavy loads. Over time, the articulation bushes and bores wear out, requiring maintenance.

CHALLENGE:

Worn articulation bushes can be replaced, but worn bores need line-boring to return them to OEM-specified tolerances. Accurate line boring is critical for ensuring the reliability and longevity of these machines after maintenance. The bores must be straight, round, and parallel to maintain machine efficiency and prevent accelerated wear or premature failure. A mining customer of GVS Reliability Products needed a precise solution to machine the pin bores on their mining shovel booms.

SOLUTION:

GVS Reliability Products provided the customer with the Easy-Laser E950C/D25 system, along with on-site training. This purpose-built system offers fast, intuitive, and highly accurate measurements for line boring operations. The Easy-Laser D25 laser transmitter first checks a reference bore, which acts as a datum to ensure all other bores remain parallel during boring operations.

The E950 system allows technicians to make precise adjustments to the boring bars, ensuring they align with the reference bore. These adjustments are monitored throughout the process using the Easy-Laser display, ensuring accuracy and confidence in the repair.

OUTCOME:

By using the Easy-Laser E950C/D25 system, the customer achieved precise line boring, ensuring that their shovel booms were restored to optimal operating conditions. With the successful completion of the line-boring operation, the mining shovel was returned to service, providing the customer confidence in the reliability and longevity of their machine.
